the end of facebook

when the almighty facebook ends, what are we going to do?
our college is on the verge of banning the infamous networking site due to complications with internal networks as well as the distraction it offers students.
we find them trying desperately to do their research when the temptation to throw a sheep at a friend is just too great and they disappear slyly behind the front of microsoft word, and play.
in an age when multitasking, multi managing and successfully navigating 6 applications in one screen is the norm for most students it is all to easy for them to negotiate facebook whilst working (except they do a lot less work) tutors find it frustrating, the IT guys start pulling their hair out, and facebook is the evil cause.

its tricky, our college offers very little in the way of a social space, we have a bar, canteen and coffee area, and a pool table, but something is absent. the location of the college is a little isolated. the local town is particularly small, most students live about 6 miles away if not further, our students lack contact somehow, and so find comfort in communicating to their pals who might only be sat 2 feet away - through facebook. its always more fun to keep a thread going throughout the day AND night.

i suppose what i would like to know is, not to sound too captain kirk, is there a better way?
its the fun of facebook which is the appeal, some staff claim it has been invaluable in finding graduates and forming a connection with them - and i couldnt agree more, but if you have that information now - put it somewhere else.
nothing should be relied on - what if facebook was pulled - the URL deleted, OMG! what next?

wouldn't be the end of the world, would it?
